Be a part of the most beloved and storied holiday travel destination in the Southeast with a visit to America’s largest home, Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. On Christmas Eve in 1895,  Eve Vanderbilt opened the doors to the Biltmore House to friends and family for the first time and a visit to this historic home has become a classic holiday destination every year since.

Christmas is an especially spectacular time to enjoy the 250-room family home as it is decked in festive finery. Biltmore’s Banquet Hall tree alone, the largest of the sixty-eight decorated Christmas trees found in the home, has 500 lights, 500 gift-wrapped packages and 500 ornaments on it.  Throughout the rooms millions of twinkling lights, miles of garland and ribbon, glowing fireplaces, inspiring music, and holiday demonstrations all add to the magical feel and set the scene for this special time of year.  This year the house, gardens, and grounds are decorated in an art motif with each tree throughout the house decorated to complement a piece of art found in the room where the tree is placed.  Candlelight Christmas Evening takes the already magnificent house and adds an air of mystery to it as choirs perform the season’s traditional music in the glassed Winter Garden and the front yard is set aglow with a fifty-five foot tree.

Brevard Brewing Company knows craft lagers. They aren’t a brewery giant mass-producing beer, but a family business located in the heart of Brevard, North Carolina that takes lager seriously. As a matter of fact, it is the only brewery in the WNC that specializes in lager, the most popular style of beer in the world.

Their Tap Room is reflective of Brevard’s sense of community –  the art work on display here is from local artists and is for sale, and on Friday and Saturday nights you can catch live musical performances from local area bands while enjoying a cold one with some old friends or while making a few new ones.

The Brevard Brewing Company draws on craft brewers’ contributions over the past several decades, creating bold, hoppy American ales, even while specializing in its signature lagers. The process may be quite painstaking, but this young company, which opened its doors in Brevard,  North Carolina in April 2012, knows you will enjoy the effort and the company’s contributions to the WNC.

When the owners of the Blue Ridge Bakery came to Brevard, North Carolina, they had originally planned to open a new restaurant, having sold their old restaurant in Charlotte.  When they arrived, however, they discovered that there were plenty of excellent restaurants already in Brevard.  They did notice, however, that there wasn’t a good high-quality bakery in town, so they decided to fill the gap.  Not wanting to completely abandon their training in the other culinary arts, however, they decided to offer classes on cooking various types of cuisine, with a heavy emphasis on international foods.  These classes are normally held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30,  and past classes have featured Indian food, Greek Main Dishes, Rustic Italian, and Grandma’s Sunday Dinner!

Upcoming classes for June will include  an Indian food class on the 5th which will feature healthy, vegetarian Middle Eastern foods such as hummus and baba ganoush.  On June 12, Cindy Wilson, chef of the Square Root restaurant in Brevard, will teach attendees some of her infamous Indian appetizers in their Guest Chef Series. Later in the month, you’ll find it’s all about shrimp along with a sampling of local Brevard Brewing Company’s beer on the 19th and the month wraps up on June 26 with a night focused on Jewish Foods such as tzimmes and a perfect beef brisket.

Attending cooking classes at the Blue Ridge Bakery is a perfect way to get out and spend an evening with friends – or make a few new ones while you’re there – and have fun learning to prepare a variety of different cuisines!

If you have questions, you can email blueridgebakery@yahoo.com or call the bakery at (828)883-8444.
