Lena Hansen To Present a Presentation on RMI’s Forthcoming Book Entitled “Reinventing Fire” in Brevard NC on 4-4-2011On April 4, 2011, Lena Hansen, a native Transylvanian and a principal with the Rocky Mountain Institute will be home to visit her parents. She has graciously agreed to present a power point presentation on RMI’s forthcoming book entitled “Reinventing Fire”.

In addition to attending Transylvania County schools, Lena graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. She graduated from UNC-CH in Physics. She also obtained a Masters in Environmental Management and Policy from Duke University and currently manages RMI’s collaboration with Duke Energy.

Lena Hansen, formerly of Brevard and currently a Principal with Rocky Mountain Institute of Boulder, CO, will speak at the Transylvania County Library on Monday, April 4, at 7:00 p.m. Her topic will be Reinventing Fire: Bold Business Solutions for the New Energy Era. Reinventing Fire is the name of their multi-year project, as well as the title of a new book to be published this fall, in which RMI is building a vision and realistic pathway for the business-led transition of the U.S. economy from fossil fuels to efficiency and renewable. Reinventing Fire will focus on opportunities in the next five years that can profitably jump-start the journey toward a fossil-fuel-free economy.
The transition will require coordinated action across the transportation, buildings, industry and electricity sectors. RMI is identifying challenges and opportunities and developing pointed recommendations for leaders who hold the power to effect change.

Lena Hansen is a Principal with RMI’s electricity practice, where she specializes in energy and carbon strategy as well as design innovation for electric utilities, heavy industry, and corporations. She contributes to and leads consulting projects on demand-side management, end-use energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, and greenhouse gas strategy.
She has worked with a diverse set of electric utilities, including most recently managing RMI’s collaboration with Duke Energy. Lena’s research work focuses on RMI’s Next Generation Utility Initiative, which aims to help drive the transformation of the electric system away from fossil fuels. Specifically, she has worked on managing the variability of wind power, including “firming” strategies and the impacts of geographically distributing systems.
Lena is from Brevard, North Carolina; she attended Brevard High School and graduated from the North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham. She holds a bachelor’s degree in astrophysics and in dramatic art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and received a master’s degree in environmental economics and policy from Duke University, with a focus on energy.
