Ok the big surprise the insulation industry like many construction materials has made leaps and bounds. I honestly believe the theory is still the same and that is to add a barrier between the colder elements to the warmer interior areas, but how you do it has amazed me.

Insulation has a tendency to settle over the years and no longer provides the air barrier it one had. How often as a Realtor when I enter into some of the older homes do I see in the attic which looks like blown in type insulation but only an inch or so deep. Many times I see the old pieces of newspaper they would shred and then spread in the attic (only good to read a very short story). So below I did some research and much naturally is copied from insulation company web sites as where else could you learn about insulation.

I have had the fortune of seeing the blown on product on the ceiling plywood and rafters, and it’s amazing the expansion within just minutes to a great depth, as well as almost instantaneously you would hear less of the exterior noise at the construction site. Here is a link to a site where you can do it yourself. Nothing like saving some money for a weekend do it yourself product.

One of our local insulation providers web site has given permission to use some of the text and I hope you learn as much as I have and I hope you will do what we are doing saving energy, helping a tenant and the owner as well as a learning curve for an agent that has been in the business now for over 35 years. As the old saying goes you never stop learning!

Fodor’s Top 21 Destination has rated Asheville North Carolina as one of the next years top 21 travel destination cities. Just to compare why Western North Carolina rated in the top 21 are the joining cities is all the natural beauty with offerings as the Pisgah National Forest, The DuPont State Forest, Biltmore Estate, Grove Park Inn, and places to stay as well, as the mentioned the Indigo. I am certain that the surrounding cities  like Brevard, Hendersonville, Waynesville and others within a half hour played an important roll. Credit was given to not only our mountains but the local art and the music scene.

Fodors went on to compare and mention other cities that made the top 21 list as Tokyo,  Stockholm and Mozambique and others. The report went on to say and emphasized that the friendliness of the people and the warm welcome you receive, helped rank Asheville, and my opinion it’s surrounding areas as Brevard North Carolina that is nearly 50% in preserved lands, mostly unspoiled by humans yet offering so much to do that one should never run out of things to do.  Here is a link to the Fodors Video with interviews of Asheville businesses and reasons why you need to set your goal this year for a visit.

New single-family home sales in December rose to their highest level in eight months and prices were the highest since April 2008, raising cautious optimism for a housing market recovery.

The Commerce Department said sales jumped 17.5 percent to a seasonally adjusted 329,000 unit annual rate after a downwardly revised 280,000-unit pace in November. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast new home sales rising to a 300,000-unit pace in December from a previously reported 290,000 unit rate. Compared to December a year earlier, sales were down 7.6 percent. Overall 2010 sales dropped 14.4 percent to a 321,000-unit rate.

Economists saw the gains as significant.

“Clearly we are seeing stabilization in new home sales and this data suggests some upward momentum that we have seen in existing home sales. What is important to realize is even in a period of softer new home sales, inventory continues to decline, said Dean Maki, chief U.S.. economist with Barclays Capital in New York.

dog wink

“The level of inventory is at its lowest since the 1960s,” Maki said. This suggests the big declines in housing starts are now behind us and housing starts should be on a gradual trend in 2011.”

Brian Bethune, an economist with HIS Global Insight in Lexington, Mass added: “It’s meaningful to the extent that there is a pattern of numbers showing increases. It’s a sign that there is a turnaround. Things are definitely perking up, but there is a question whether it’s sustainable.

Do you get enought Vitamin D?

Vitamins

With an ample amount of sunlight, you can actually create vitamin D — which has helped decrease risk of vitamin D-deficiency diseases such as rickets and osteomalacia in areas with frequent sunny days. But there’s more to this very cheery vitamin than meets the eye. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, and without it, bones are weakened. However, too much vitamin D can be toxic, especially in children. In this article, we’ll discuss the importance and amounts needed of vitamin D. Here’s a brief overview:

•What is Vitamin D?
Your body can make its own vitamin D with enough sunlight — which researchers discovered when it became clear vitamin D-deficiency diseases such as rickets were rare in sunny climates. In the 1920s, rickets was prevented by feeding children cod liver oil or foods exposed to ultraviolet light. Today rickets is rare in the United States because milk is now fortified with vitamin D. Learn about vitamin D’s history.

•Benefits of Vitamin D
Viitamin D is needed to help the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, which help growth of bones and teeth. In addition, vitamin D regulates whether these minerals are deposited into bone or withdrawn out of it. If minerals are drawn out more than they are put in, this can leave bones soft and weak. On this page, we’ll discuss more about vitamin D’s uses.

•Foods That Contain Vitamin D

The foods that contain significant amounts of vitamin D naturally are not necessarily foods you want to overdo: butter, cream, egg yolks and liver. However, all milk — including skim — is fortified with vitamin D and is an excellent source. Learn more about what foods are vitamin D sources.

•Vitamin D Deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency causes rickets, or bone softening, in children, and in adults can cause osteomalacia, which involves the loss of calcium and protein from bones. Though rickets is rare in the United States today, some cases do appear in low-income and vegetarian children and infants breast-fed for an extended period of time with no supplementation. Find out more about Vitamin D deficiency in this section.
•Vitamin D Supplements

Adding extra vitamin D to a diet can be helpful for vegans, babies who are breastfed and people with rickets. However, too much vitamin D can be toxic, resulting in calcium deposits in the kidneys, heart and other tissues that causes irreversible damage, and therefore amounts should be carefully regulated.

Always check with your Doctor before adding or subtracting supplements but as Dr Oz says Vitamin D is one of the most critical supplements unless you get regular sunshine.

Real estate and agents are like a good, or could be like and  overdose of vitamin D.
